The formula of Teriaca derives directly from Galen. De Theriaca ad Pisonem was one of the most read and commented parts of Galen texts in the Renaissance.

.Essendo dunque già nel corpo humano entrato il veneno…hanno stimato i medici rationali che, mettendovi dentro un altro veneno, facilmente si smoverebbe per andare a trovare il suo simile. Ma perché il moversi solo non basta a salvare l’huomo, han posto tanti  contraveneni insieme con questo veneno; acciò, venendo quello del corpo a trovare l’altro, fusse dapoi domato et vinto et discacciato fuori: perché mettendo il contraveneno solo, farebbe per un certo spacio concentrare più addentro il veneno per fugire il contrario et intanto potrebbe, prima che da davero giugnesse la forza dell’antidoto, ammazzare l’huomo;  per far dunque che il veneno che sta nel corpo più facilmente e con più celerità sia tocco dal contraveneno, e perché quello non sia tanto resistente al nemico, vi ha posto uno come per ispia, il quale, con destro modo lo lievi dalla sua fortezza e a sé lo chiami per tradirlo poi con la imboscata de’ medicamenti, nemici mortali del veneno…”.
